The challenges facing road-side ‘m-Preneurs’ in leap-frogging the constraints of ICTs in DCs: A Nigerian case study

Studies have shown that the number of mobile telecommunications operators in Nigeria has been on the increase since the first Global System of Mobile Telecommunications (GSM) licence was granted to MTN (Mobile Telecommunications Network) in 2001. With the increase in mobile telecommunications operators also has come an unprecedented increase in subscriptions. According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) data, between 2001 and 2006 for instance, mobile telephone subscribers in Nigeria jumped from 266, 461 to 32.3 million indicating an increase of 12, 030.18 %

Number, please: New Hampshire telephone operators in the predial era, 1877--1973

The predial telephone era in New Hampshire stretched from about 1877 to 1973. This dissertation examines predial telephone operating in the state as a category of women\u27s work. While growing out of and responding to technical invention and development, telephone operating had deep roots in women\u27s social roles; gender defined occupational options, the work environment, the rules of employment, wages, and expectations. As the telephone system developed, differences between telephone operating in large and small exchanges developed; the urban operator eventually worked under conditions of traffic volume, supervision, and control that the rural operator often did not. To uncover the differences, this dissertation traces and compares the early development of the telephone in two New Hampshire locations: the city of Manchester, which in 1878 or 1879 was the site of the first exchange in New Hampshire, and the village of Meriden in Plainfield, which in 1973 was the site of the last New Hampshire magneto system to convert to dial. To help maintain an approach told from telephone operators\u27 perspectives, the research draws on oral history interviews of New Hampshire operators taken and transcribed in the decade from 1990--2000. Other documentation such as diaries, letters, newspapers, and census records support and build context. Following a roughly chronological order, chapter one, What Else Could A Woman Do? sets the context by outlining the occupational and social options for women in New Hampshire as the telephone system began. In The Telephone Comes to Manchester, and The Telephone Comes to Meriden, new research documents and compares development of the telephone business in a large and a small exchange in the state, including the introduction of women as telephone operators. Other chapters look at the effects of technical developments on the job, the heyday of telephone operating when independent and New England Telephone and Telegraph exchanges linked with AT&T\u27s long lines to become part of a nationwide and then worldwide system, the conversion to automatic switching, and a comparison of images of operators with the actual experience of telephone operating. Appendix A is a discussion with examples of transcribing and using oral history excerpts for public presentations. Appendix B includes photographs of New Hampshire switchboards and operators

    Triple Play Time

Abstract: Digital convergence thrusts telephony, television and the internet into the socalled 'triple play' offerings, creating new forms of rivalry between cable operators and telephone companies. Markets participants feel compelled to enter new industries to survive, even though their core competencies are limited to their primary market. The outcome of triple play competition is likely to depend on the speed of the development of new technologies and the adaptation of the regulatory environment. In the short run, telephone companies will enjoy an advantage attributable to switching costs. However, this advantage will erode as younger subscribers switch to telephony on the internet.triple play; bundling; digital convergence; broadband access; television and telephone

Team building is the process of causing a group of people to work together effectively as a team, especially by means of activities and events designed to increase motivation and promote cooperation. Effective teamwork allows teams to produce outcomes greater than the sum of individual members. The objective of the study was to determine contribution of employees` team building programs on performance of Mobile Telephone Network Operators (MTNOs) in Kenya. Variables used to analyze contribution of employees` team building programs on performance of Mobile Telephone Network Operators (MTNOs) in Kenya were team building workshops, team building seminars and team bonding meetings. Performance of Mobile Telephone Operators was analyzed in terms of profit margins and market share. Social identity theory was used to explain the contribution of employees` team building programs on performance. Study population was 6,167 which included all the employees in the Mobile Telephone Network Operators in Kenya and a total sample size of 361 employees was obtained although only 258 questionnaires were filled and returned. Proportionate stratification formula was used to allocate sample sizes to each department of the Mobile Telephone Operators. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The hypothesis was tested at 95% confidence interval and 0.05 α level of significance.  Study H0 stated that: employees` team building programs have no significant relationship with performance of MTNOs in Kenya. Goodness of fit model demonstrated that team building programs had a positive influence on performance of MTNOs accounting for 38.1% of the performance (R squared = .381). The study concluded that there was a statistically significant influence of team building programs on performance therefore rejecting the null hypothesis at β = .617, P = .000. New “Unbundling” Rules: Will the FCC Finally Open Up Cable Broadband?

    Get PDF
This iBrief discusses a recent Court of Appeals decision remanding FCC rules on the unbundling of Internet services by telephone exchange carriers. These rules ordered many Internet service providers to share their equipment with competitors, so that consumers could choose their providers instead of having to accept all services from the company who installed the physical Internet connection. Cable Internet providers are not included in these rules. This iBrief predicts that cable broadband operators will soon be governed by the same unbundling provisions as other ISPs
